Repetition and Randomness
The original Drakengard title played like a slow and boring Dynasty Warriors knock-off, with aerial combat thrown in for good measure. What made Drakengard unique was its dark and bizarre story, which was filled with horrid people, Lovecraftian monstrosities, and ridiculous twists.

Drakengard 3 is a purely action-driven game. The RPG elements are negligible at best—players can upgrade Zero's equipment or buy new weapons and items between missions. She also earns experience during combat, which increases her levels once the mission has concluded; this grants more health and stamina.

Ground-based melee combat is the meat and potatoes of Drakengard 3. As Zero journeys across the world to defeat her sisters, strange monsters and hostile soldiers alike challenge her. The two-button combo system lets you bust out flashy attacks for ripping through enemies. Zero also has an evasive dash and a block technique that she uses to parry incoming attacks. As the story progresses, she earns new weapon types to enrich her offense. She starts off with a sword, but earns heavy spears, fighting gauntlets, and ranged chakrams, all of which can be switched to and utilized on-the-fly.

With its flashy and over-the-top attack animations, Drakengard 3 seems to take a leaf out of Bayonetta's book, at first glance. Sadly, for all its focus on action, the combat in Drakengard 3 is mediocre at best. As Zero upgrades her weapons, new attacks and combo extensions are unlocked. Switching among weapons during combat is fun, and the alternate weapons add a touch of freshness to the fighting when they're first introduced. Beyond that, though, the combat quickly becomes stale and repetitive.

It's a culmination of issues that cripple Drakengard 3's gameplay. Aerial combos are virtually worthless, since players get more combo hits by striking groups of enemies on the ground. There isn't much incentive to landing long combo strings on enemies either, as the rewards are negligible, save for very select bonus enemy types. Even if you used the limited move set to the fullest, you repeat many of the same attacks, because all combo branches for any given weapon stem from the same base combo. There is no notable scoring system in place to encourage players to string together long combos, nor is there any scoring system to encourage players to vary their attacks.

Enemies are relatively brain-dead, and rarely try to defend themselves; fighting them for as long a game as Drakengard 3 can get tedious. Tougher enemies are made 'harder' by giving them more health and making them resistant to basic attacks—not more interesting in any way.

The biggest flaw with Drakengard 3's combat, however, is that it feels weightless and imprecise. There are some interesting mechanics at play, but fighting is too loose for any of these techniques to matter. Attacks don't stun enemies reliably. Dodging attacks is a great way to avoid taking damage, for example, but dodging has the obnoxious habit of screwing up the camera, making it difficult to see incoming attacks. Locking-on is useful for tracking an enemy, but switching targets is awkward and also messes with the camera. The only reliable ability Zero has in her arsenal is her parry technique, which works fantastically. Unfortunately, the frame-rate can drop so low during combat that it can throw off the timing.

How Not to Train Your Dragon
Longtime Drakengard fans will also notice that they can no longer mount their dragon during combat. The original game let you hop onto the back of your dragon to whittle-down enemy numbers from the skies above, whenever you wanted. Most missions in Drakengard 3 have Zero running down themed corridors while fighting hordes of enemies, so the dragon mount mechanic is limited to very specific missions in the game.

Dragon-mounted missions serve as a change of pace from the usual monotonous hacking and slashing, yet somehow feel even more limited than fighting with Zero alone. Dragon Mikhail's aerial attacks are weighty, slow, and bizarrely inaccurate. Rather than letting you aim Mikhail's fire with the right thumb-stick, the game makes you aim attacks with the left stick, which also controls his movement. You move Mikhail around the screen to aim his fire, but the target reticle is imprecise, even after adjusting the aiming controls and sensitivity. Aerial combat isn't intuitive, and there are situations where you are expected to take down bosses utilizing these awkward mechanics.

Drakengard 3's difficulty arises from the awkward controls and changes in control between differing gameplay sections, rather than from any genuine challenge. Dragon-mounted fights can drag on because Mikhail's fireballs often miss their mark. Heavens forbid you're trying to hit a moving target. How do you like these obnoxious doll enemies? You don't? Well, fight a gauntlet of fifty, as a boss. Or how about a total curveball, like a brutally unforgiving eight-minute-long rhythm game for a boss?

Very Flawed Fun
For all its flaws, some may find a certain charm to Drakengard 3's vulgar, anything-goes story. Uncovering new pieces of the story, and seeing how each of the game's story branches conclude is perhaps the biggest incentive to finishing the game. But slogging through areas while fighting the same enemies recolored for the umpteenth time becomes dreadfully repetitive. The wildly fluctuating frame-rate and lengthy loading times also bog the game down. Drakengard 3 brings some interesting ideas to the table in terms of theme and characters, but its gameplay flaws weigh it down to mediocrity.
