- Pros
Manic fighting action. Cool comic book-style visual aesthetic. Tag-team fighting. Large, fun roster.
- Cons
Annoying infinite combos. The graphics are a bit dark at times.
- Bottom Line
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 rumbles onto PC years after its original, last-generation console release. Despite irritating infinite combos and a barren online lobby, it was worth the wait, thanks to fun fighting, included console DLC, and a wallet-friendly price.
It's been a long time since I punched Galactus in the face. In fact, I remember the last time that I did. It was the summer 2014, just days before I tossed my Xbox 360 in the trash. I never expected to play Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ever again, as the universe-mashing video game graced consoles, not the PC platform that I had just migrated to with glee. Now, three years later, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a $24.99 PC game that brings all of its oddball characters, wild gameplay, and captivating comic book-inspired visual aesthetic to the Windows platform. However, I could definitely do without the infinite combos and dead online multiplayer scene.

Make Mine Marvel (and Capcom)
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the update to Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, a fighting game that pits both popular and semi-obscure Marvel superheroes against Capcom's equally freaky video game characters. There are 48 characters to choose from, which make Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's roster nearly as hefty as The King of Fighters XIII's 50-fighter lineup.
The headcount is impressive, but it's the individual characters that truly make the game shine. On the Marvel side are several popular fighters, such as Captain America, Iron Man, and Spider-Man, as well as once-obscure characters that have gained recognition thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Doctor Strange and Rocket Raccoon. On the Capcom side is a roster that's comprised mainly of characters from the company's fighting and action games, including Final Fight's Mike Haggar and Street Fighter's Ryu. It's an eclectic mix of fighting-game archetypes that includes shotos, brawlers, and projectile hurlers.
Throwing Down the Gauntlet
Like The King of Fighters XIII, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's action is team-based, three-on-three fighting that's powered by a four-button control scheme. While SNK's game uses a traditional light and heavy approach for characters' punches and kicks, Capcom's title has a simpler, undefined light, medium, and heavy option that can either be a punch or kick depending on the character. And the fourth button? That lets you launch characters into the air for aerial combos, as well as swap your active character for one of your reserves. If you're accustomed to playing fighting games with more traditional control schemes, such as Garou: Mark of the Wolves or Mortal Kombat XL, the button layout may initially feel a bit foreign.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's tag-centric fisticuffs separates it from many competing fighting games, which typically rely on one-on-one brawling. Street Fighter V doesn't let you tag, nor does Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. In fact, Skullgirls 2nd Encore is one of the few notable PC fighting games that lets you swap characters on the fly.
The distinction between the fighting in Skullgirls and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a large one. Skullgirls has anti-infinite systems that discourage looping combos, but Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, like the other games in its series, embraces long, high-damage, combos. This results in a game that's incredibly fun to play against people who aren't looking to abuse the exploits, but one that's also frustrating to watch when top-tier players square off. Seeing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 played on a world stage, such as Evo, is an absolute snooze fest as expert players live and die on the game's exploitable move sets. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would've benefited from a Killer Instinct-style combo breaker to cut down on the shenanigans.
X-Factors
Still, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is fun-filled fighter. At its base is the simple idea of your favorite Marvel Comics characters fighting your favorite Capcom video game characters. Seeing Mike Haggar give Thor the business end of a pipe never gets old.
The fighting engine also has an X-Factor mechanic (activated by pressing all the attack buttons in unison), which grants the character you control increased speed, damage output, and health regeneration over a brief period of time. Deftly using it can cement your lead or change the tide of battle into your favor if you're on the losing end of a battle. You're limited to one use of the X-Factor per match, but its strength increases depending on the number of non-active characters you have. For example, if you're using Super-Skrull and your Chun-Li and Chris Redfield are KO'd, you can bust out a Level 3 X-Factor. Assists, Hyper Combos, and Advancing Guards are the additional high-end moves that round out the offensive and defensive tactics.
You'll use these gameplay tools mainly in the single-player and local versus modes, because there's hardly anyone playing online. It's a ghost town. That said, I did enjoy lag-free matches in the few times I found someone to fight online.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 includes several modes beyond the standard single-player, versus, and practice options. The most intriguing of these is Heroes and Heralds, a mode that was originally DLC for the console versions of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. With it, you customize characters with cards that add new powers and upgrades to existing abilities. It's a fine way to play remixed versions of your favorite characters.
Minimum Specs and Options
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 isn't a very demanding game. In fact, its Steam page lists a 2.4GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and the Windows 7 operating system as the minimum requirements. My Windows 10gaming desktop, which is powered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 GPU, pushed the polygons at 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution.
Thankfully, the game didn't chug even as I busted out combos using a Qanba Q4 RAF Blackarcade stick. You see, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has a comic book-style aesthetic that's just as flashy as the art you'd see in the Hulk or Uncanny X-Men titles. The dazzling special moves and screen-filling super attacks are impressive displays of the good that can happen when the video game industry treats comic book properties with care. And my graphics card handled all that extravagance with aplomb.
That said, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a visually dark game that boasts ink-like character outlines and gloomy backgrounds. I wish it had Marvel vs. Capcom 2: A New Age of Heroes' visual brilliance.
When Worlds Collide

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 isn't the best game in the series; Marvel vs. Capcom 2 gets the nod there. Still, the fighting game is a good one that plays well on PC. Its crazed pace is good in spurts, but I'd rather fire up The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match Final Edition or Skullgirls 2nd Encore for lengthier, team-based brawling sessions.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (for PC)
Bottom Line: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 rumbles onto PC years after its original, last-generation console release. Despite irritating infinite combos and a barren online lobby, it was worth the wait, thanks to fun fighting, included console DLC, and a wallet-friendly price.
